No Poo Haircare

No Poo HaircareIf you’re into living a natural lifestyle and care about what you put in your mouth… there will come a day when you take a peek at the ingredients in your favorite shampoo and wonder – what’s in this stuff and is it really safe? Sorry to give you the bad news – but there’s a good chance it’s a toxic chemical cocktail. The FDA does not oversee personal care products so they can be marketed however they want (all natural!) when they may be anything but.

It may not seem like it matters if the stuff you put on your hair is edible (or at least nontoxic), but here’s the thing: your skin absorbs everything you put on it. I know what you’re going to say – your shampoo is natural (maybe even organic!) and you got it from a natural foods store. Sorry – there’s a good likelihood it still has a lot of toxic ingredients in it. Want to find out for sure? Look up your fave shampoo at the Environmental Working Group and see what they have to say about it.

Want an alternative?

No Poo stands for No Shampoo and it’s become a bit of a movement. Us No Poo-ers have rebelled against Big Shampoo and taken our hair back one strand at time. Don’t worry, you don’t need to look like a hippy or suffer with greasy hair to be part of the No Poo movement. I’ve been No Poo for about 5 years now and even my hairdresser can’t believe I don’t use shampoo on my hair.

So what do I use?

Baking soda and apple cider vinegar. That’s it? Pretty much… Ok, I will admit to using a super natural deep conditioner and a bit of coconut oil as well :).

Here are the details on how I “wash” my hair once a week:

  1. I shake a bit of baking soda in the palm of my hand and wet it, making a paste. I scrub the baking soda paste throughout my hair and then rinse it out with water.
  2. I then squirt about 4 oz of diluted Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) on my hair as a rinse (I have a bottle in my shower already pre-mixed: 3 tablespoons of ACV + water in a 32 oz bottle).
  3. I follow it up with a deep conditioner (you might want to check those ingredients as well). I try to avoid “cones” in my conditioners and styling products. Worried about frizz without the cones? Coconut and shea butter oil work well and are natural moisturizers to boot.

What are the No Poo benefits (besides reducing toxins and saving money on shampoo)?

If you have super dry hair, your hair won’t be as dry. Shampoo strips the natural oils from your hair and scalp. For some people (like me) this creates a dry hair situation – where no matter how much conditioner I use my hair is still bone dry (yuck!).

For those who are oilier, their scalp reacts by doubling up the oil production which creates the need for daily shampooing (and even more oil production!). Neither situation is ideal.

By using baking soda and ACV, we the natural oils in our hair and scalp are retained, so it’s easier to attain that perfect head of hair that isn’t too dry or too greasy.

Warning!

There is an adjustment period. If you have dry hair, the adjustment period probably won’t be too bad. For those of you with oily hair, the adjustment will be tougher. But within 2-4 weeks, you too will be able to stop buying shampoo. I recommend “washing” your hair with baking soda more often to start off with and then less often as your scalp adjusts to the No Poo lifestyle.

Everyone has unique hair. If No Poo’s not working for you (even after the adjustment period) don’t give up. You’ll find more options by Googling No Poo – hopefully you will find the perfect recipe for your luscious locks!

Wow, what an amazing program! I went from feeling sluggish & self-conscious to feeling healthy & ready to rock my bikini in just 6 weeks. Liz's knowledge and deep care really guided me through this process beautifully, and having the fantastic group support motivated me to eat well, move my body, and feel good about myself. Thank you!

I worked with Liz for 6 months on a plan for me to have a healthy relationship with food and to make eating well and exercising an automatic habit in my life. The plan, the work and the outcome were all a success! Liz combined her knowledge of food, nutrition and holistic health with her genuine passion to help others make positive changes. This was all done in such an authentic fashion that I finished the program with the self-awareness and knowledge of food that I needed to be an intuitive eater with healthy habits. I'm cooking more, eating better and exercise is a routine that I don't think twice about incorporating.  I look and feel better.  I know that Liz's support, clear and applicable exercises and tools helped me make these changes and that these changes will be long lasting. I am and will be forever grateful to her.

I have found Liz's work extremely beneficial and have improved my overall well-being since I have seen her. Liz is very knowledgeable on self-care and holistic health and practices it herself. She is very accommodating and trustworthy. Someone you can count on to find the imbalances and try to help alleviate them. From the moment you walk in her space it is calm, safe, and inviting to start the healing process. I can't say enough good things :)

I am a busy mom of two and have been wanting to lose those extra few pounds for years now. On my own, I lacked the motivation to stick to a healthier eating plan for more than a few weeks. After completing Liz's 6-week plan I feel confident that I can maintain better eating habits as a lifestyle choice, in way that I have been wanting to for years. Not only did I loose 5 pounds in the six weeks, but I also lost 2 inches each from my hips and thighs; 1.5 inches from my waist! I learned new yummy recipes, and so much more. Thank you, Liz!

The food involved in this cleanse was so good and nourishing that after the 5 days were up, I found myself actually turned off of sugary treats and instead craving roasted root vegetables! Liz is very knowledgeable and was very supportive throughout the cleanse.

Liz is my therapist. She's soft-spoken. But don't let that fool you because she has Ninja fingers! In 60 minutes, she bends and folds, twists and pulls at my comatose body. Shiatsu kind of feels like someone is putting me in yoga poses while simultaneously working my pressure points. The result, for me, is leaving "the shop" feeling loose and better aligned.

Before I started working with Liz, I thought I was "healthy". Boy, was I in for a surprise.  With Liz's guidance I was able to "crowd out" most processed foods.  What a huge difference!  I eat more fruits and veggies than ever before and I notice a difference in my skin, my mood, and my body.  Liz also helped me face up to and conquer a major Diet Addiction and deal with a negative body image.  For the first time in my life, I truly love my body, AS IS! Thanks so much Liz! You truly changed my life for the better!
